Teacher Photo Shoot Ideas

For the latest installment of our job series, I’m focused on our hardworking teachers. I didn’t want to use a modern-looking classroom for our teacher photo shoot. I wanted a setting with a bit more character, so I went with a vintage-style classroom.

How to Get a Inexpensive Vintage Look

If you like the retro look, and you’re starting to get your own teacher photo shoot ideas, you’ll probably have no problem finding suitable locations where you live. Just look for a building built during the era you like in industrial sections of your town. The odds are they haven’t been updated in decades.

Then you just need to add a few appropriate decor items. For my teacher photo shoot, I brought an old globe, a retro phone, and a vintage desktop computer.

Conferring With the Model

The model for this shoot is Jessica (Naz) Nazarenus. We discussed possible lingerie combinations and which fake glasses might look good. School teacher photo shoot ideas seem to always include that gorgeous bespectacled teacher look.

Pretty in Pink

We started with Jessica in a pink/champagne-colored combo. You’ll notice she used a white jacket as a prop, tossed over one shoulder. Jackets, coats, scarves, and other layered clothing are great to have available. They give models options for doing things with their hands.

How to Visually Add to Your Photos

I was using a 28mm lens at f3.5. My ISO was 500, and my shutter speed 1/160. Notice how the short lens allowed me to include much more information in the frame. For example, I got the blackboard in the background with the computer and the desk chair in the foreground.

As a bonus, look at the computer screen. I positioned it to reflect the window and the industrial setting outside. That’s one of the simplest school teacher photo shoot ideas that brings another layer of visual texture to a photo.

Props, Props, and More Props

I switched to an 85mm lens to get close-ups of Jessica playing with our vintage phone. Maybe she was calling a student’s home to request a parent-teacher conference with a very fortunate father.

I then used my 100mm lens for some shots of Jessica perched on the edge of the teacher’s desk while holding a pointer. I also had a complimentary lighting source pointed upward, bouncing light off the white ceiling.

We then used another prop, the globe, for Jessica to pretend she was looking for something during geography class.

I opted for a 57mm lens for the globe shots with the ISO at 1000 to compensate for shifting light conditions.

The Lady in Red

Jessica’s second outfit was a red bra with a black leather skirt and jacket. I began with a 53mm lens and a 640 ISO. I took full advantage of the natural light pouring in through the wall-to-wall windows behind the desk. Whatever your school teacher photo shoot ideas might include, always take into account the amount of available light.

Did I Mention Props?

We switched things up by having Jessica pose at one of the student desks. I moved a tall plant so that it would partially show up in the shot. Without the plant, Jessica would have been in front of a plain wall.

The plant also adds a nice, subtle pop of green, which goes well with her outfit. The right background prop can mean the difference between an interesting and a boring shot.
I was shooting at only ISO 400 with a 70mm lens opened at f3.5.

Understand How to Stand

I asked Jessica to go to the blackboard and pretend to do math. That could have been a dull shot, except for two things.

First, I knew the cutout in the back of her skirt would add visual interest. Second, I got Jessica to cross her legs while standing, which automatically shifts the body’s weight.

Now, you no longer have a person standing straight like a soldier. Instead, her new stance lengthens her legs and emphasizes the feminine curvature of her body.

I shot those poses with 50mm and 31mm lenses and an ISO setting of 1000.

I then took a moment to show Jessica how good the photos turned out. Be ready to share your teacher photo shoot ideas with your model. She’ll be more motivated when she sees how well you work together.

Nude, But Not Nude Nude

For the third and final outfit, Jessica switched to a nude-colored lingerie set. We also made good use of the glasses. Once again, props can be your best friends. In one pose, she wore glasses while we included the blackboard and the globe in the background with the computer and the phone in the foreground.

I captured some good wide-angle shots with my 28mm, 41mm, 42mm, and 44mm lenses that let me include a generous amount of material. I ended the teacher photo shoot using a 55mm lens.

I was happy with the photo shoot and so was Jessica. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I want to go nominate Jessica for Teacher of the Year.
